Marcin Góralczyk, CTO of Microamp, contributed to the latest nGRG O-RAN ALLIANCE research report by providing expert insights into the technical foundations of next-generation Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS).
The objective of this research report is to identify the key requirements and architectural principles relevant to next-generation DAS, which are expected to provide significantly more advanced functionalities than those used in 3G and 4G networks. In terms of requirements, eight core aspects have been defined — including capacity expansion, infrastructure sharing and energy saving. In parallel, eight design principles have been outlined, emphasizing compliance with 3GPP and O-RAN ALLIANCE specifications and ensuring high reliability.
To fulfill these principles, the report highlights Analog Radio over Fiber (A-RoF) as a key enabling technology, offering flexible solutions for frequency conversion, multiplexing techniques and network topology. A-RoF plays a critical role in overcoming core technical challenges, including the synchronization of SS/PBCH blocks when multiple antennas transmit the same signal to a single user equipment (UE).
The report's findings result from in-depth use case and gap analyses conducted by nGRG between 2022 and 2024, contributing to the development of more efficient, scalable and sustainable DAS solutions for the future.
